Throughout the production of my animation, I have stuck to deadlines by creating documents to aid my production such as weekly production schedules to allow me to complete the work on time. I have used multiple software applications to create the content for animation. I have used photoshop to create the planets using tools such as shape, brush, burn and using fades and clipping layers.
Here are the assets used in my animation. I created these in Photoshop and saved them as PNG files so that they are trasnsparent and can be placed above other layers.
I created the entire animation in After effects by using the 3D layers to create a moving stage. I set the framerate to 60FPS and the software would match my movements to 60FPS so that i didn't have to move it frame by frame. As i didnt have any talking or characters I didnt have to create puppets in Adobe Character however I did test the software.
For the animation I placed the planets and spaceship on different layers so that they could overlap and could go around each other on the 3D plain.
Evidence of my creating my planets:
Sun:
Here is the original sketch of the Sun:
I began the creation of the animation by creating the planets. The first planet I created was The Sun, which I began by creating a circle as the base and outline.
Next I created a clipping mask layer so that the inside of the sun doesn't smudge or go outside it. This means that the sun can have texture inside it and be neat. I included the black spots on the sun that are on the sun in real life to add details to it. I used feather pen tool top create thin/dotty strokes to add detail and colour to the planet as it is aimed at children so it needs to be more than one colour.
Here is the finished Planet I used in the final animation. It majorly differs to the sketch because I felt like the drawing didn't match the other planets style.
Mercury:
Sketch:
Mercury was created very similarly to the sun as I used a clipping layer and used a dot tool to create the blue and white on the planet, which adds more colour and detail while still achieving it's target audience. In comparison to the planned sketch, I changed the planet so that the white and blue is not connected as it looked messy and over detailed which took away from the target audience of children.
This was the finished planet that was used in my animation. In comparison to the sketch, the finished product looks alot better and neater and better matches the other planets. I decided not to add links between the white and the blue however I did add the white and blue in the same spot to show the temperature of the surface of Mercury such as ice.
Venus:
Sketch
Similarly to the other planets, I started with a circle and added the details later on. After the circle I created a clipping mask and used a gradient to get a light to dark smooth fade across the surface.
After adding this gradient, I began working on the texture of the planet. I did this by using 'chunky charcoal' textured brush and then used a smudge tool to blur it and make the texture look smoother rather than dotted.
After this I used the burn tool at the bottom to create a darker shade to create shadows and include depth in the design.
Here is the finished design i used for Venus in the animation. In comparison to the sketch, i decided to make the planet darker because when I was comparing it to photos of the planet, the sketch was too light. I kept the same style of brush strokes across the surface to create textures.
Earth:
Sketch:
Much like the other planets Earth only uses 2 layers. The first layer is the circle that will be the shape and size of The Earth in the animation. After filling the right shade of blue I had to create a clipping mask layer and used the paint brush tool to draw the countries. The creation of this planet was very straight forward and didn't require any extra steps or tools.
Mars:
Mars also began with a circle to create the shape and size that I wanted. I began creating texture for the planet by using a brush tool for different shades to create shadows across the surface.
I used the smudge tool to blend all of the colours together to make it look like light being cast across the surface by the sun. This was the final design i used for the animation.
Jupiter:
Jupiter started with a plain circle and was created bigger than the other planets as it is the biggest planet in the solar system.
I used the gradient tool and selected the colours in the correct order to blend the colours in the correct order. I used different shades of white and brown which combined in order to correctly create a realistic design.
At the end i used the brush tool to create the orange spot that can be seen on the real Jupiter so that it is as recognisable as possible while also appearing child-like.
This was the final stage of the creation of Jupiter that was used in my animation.
